Martial Arts as a Way to Become More Fit

Some people think martial arts are all about kicking butt and beating up people, but that’s about as far from the truth as you can get. Actually, in many Asian countries, the martial arts are taught to children, but not as a way of self defense. Instead, martial arts are considered a great way to get exercise. There are many incredible ways martial arts can help you be more fit.

Martial arts typically require you to use your entire body. By performing moves, you’ll find that your leg muscles, core abdominal muscles, and even arm muscles get a full workout. This makes performing martial arts just as beneficial as aerobics and other high-energy exercise routines. You’ll also increase your heart rate and get blood pumping through your body, both of which are important in an exercise routine.

Some martial arts moves are performed slowly, while other moves are done at faster speeds. No matter what, you’ll be stretching and flexing muscles, becoming more tone and more fit. In this day and age, many of us sit at desks all day working on the computer, which means we don’t stretch or flex our muscles nearly as much as we should. Martial arts can help remedy this and increase our flexibility.

The martial arts offer a huge number of benefits: better balance, easier breathing, more endurance, improved hand-eye coordination, and more. Many mild forms of martial arts are often practiced by the elderly as a way of staying in shape. Of course, performing martial arts regularly will also help you avoid becoming overweight, which is very important as well.

But martial arts do more than just help you become physically fit. The philosophy behind nearly every type of martial art is unity—mind and body working together to achieve perfection. To that end, breathing and meditation techniques are often taught alongside kicks, punches, and other more aggressive moves. In many ways, martial arts are similar to Yoga and Tai Chi in that it will help you to learn to center yourself. This can help you clear your mind and focus yourself.
